           ASSURING SAFETY AND QUALITY THROUGH TESTING

 

                                                                                         picture of fireworksText Box: The American Fireworks Standards Laboratory (AFSL) is an independent, non-profit corporation established in 1989 by members of the fireworks industry to:
 
develop and maintain voluntary safety and quality standards for each classification of fireworks;
 
assist manufacturers in improving safety and quality in the design, manufacture and performance of fireworks;
 
provide a testing program to determine whether new and existing fireworks items comply with AFSL standards;
 
provide a certification program for fireworks shipped to the U. S. importer members;
 
promote the use of the AFSL certification mark as a symbol that fireworks have been tested against safety and quality standards;
 
support the efforts of organizations that promote the safe use of fireworks; and
 
monitor reported injuries and product malfunctions and modify standards, as appropriate, based on these data.
