The American Fireworks Standards Laboratory (AFSL) is an independent, non-profit corporation established in 1989 by members of the fireworks industry to:

  • Develop and maintain voluntary safety and quality standards for each classification of fireworks;

  • Assist manufacturers in improving safety and quality in the design, manufacture and performance of fireworks;

  • Provide a testing program to determine whether new and existing fireworks items comply with AFSL standards;

  • Provide a certification program for fireworks shipped to the U. S. importer members;

  • Promote the use of the AFSL certification mark as a symbol that fireworks have been tested against safety and quality standards;

  • Support the efforts of organizations that promote the safe use of fireworks; and

  • Monitor reported injuries and product malfunctions and modify standards, as appropriate, based on these data.
